Genesis 2021

season 01, 05.15 | AND the lord

We celebrate the end of our Genesis study tonight and the things God taught us over these 14 weeks. We’ll get to hear from some of you as we reflect on all we’re taking away from Genesis as a community.

season 01, 05.14 | that dreamer

We finish our trek through Genesis tonight by seeing the resolution of the Joseph narrative – when he has the opportunity to confront those that harmed him, his brothers. We will explore the resolve Joseph had to lean into the good that God had worked out of the intended evil of the brothers’ sin, and look at an unlikely hero in the story: Judah, who, like Joseph, models an important part of the Good News of Jesus centuries before it happens.

season 01, 05.13 | character & crisis

Joseph’s story continues; sold into slavery by his brothers we find him in Egypt. But first, a tale of his older brother Judah, where we discover Joseph’s character foil. What does character look like in crisis? What does it look like day to day? God was with Joseph through every trial and Joseph gave his all to honor him, even when things turned towards the worst. We will look at how we carry ourselves, what we “clothe” ourselves in, and how we can live like Joseph in our own contexts.

season 01, 05.12 | jealousy & the peaceful heart

Tonight we continue our study of Genesis with the story of Joseph. We’ll explore how Jacob’s favoritism of his son Joseph causes intense jealousy amongst his brothers leading to suffering and destruction. Thankfully, we are given the antidote to the poison of jealousy: the peace that comes with knowing who You are in Christ.

season 01, 05.11 | struggling with God

Jacob’s story continues this week with a mysterious encounter with God, marking him for life. We’ll explore what this passage communicates about God’s expectations of his people, the permission he gives us to struggle, and how his grace always leaves us different than he found us.

season 01, 05.10 | birthrights & blessings

As we continue to move through the book of Genesis, tonight’s chapters are all about family…the dysfunction and deception and sibling rivalry of one particular family - Isaac’s family. It’s the the tale of twin brothers who were far from perfect as they struggled with expectation and comparison, and a story of God bringing hope and blessing to the world through a messy family fraught with betrayal and distrust and fractured relationships.

season 01, 05.09 | like stars in the sky

Abraham and Sarah have a son – after waiting their entire lives. Decisions from the past and present now come into focus as Abraham’s faith and resolve meet their ultimate test: does he love anything more than God? What was God up to, and what is the story of Abraham and Isaac supposed to teach us in our modern world as followers of Jesus?

season 01, 05.08 | city of wrath

Our Genesis study continues with the famous story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. We can learn a lot about the nature of God and God-in-the-flesh as Jesus by what we see in this account. The question at the end of the day is: What can we learn from the actual event of the story in the Bible and what it asks of us as followers of Jesus all of these years later?

season 01, 05.07 | waiting & wreckage

Tonight’s message is all about waiting, and waiting is always the worst part. As we follow the lives of Abram and Sarai, we discover how waiting can lead to wreckage and the faithful response of God to his people in their desperation.

season 01, 05.06 | remembering god

As we follow Abram’s journey through Genesis 12 & 13, we start to we ask how does he keep on believing God as more and more time passes…as reality and doubt and his circumstances begin to settle in, how does he remember God? The question for us becomes, how do we remember God in the in-between places?

season 01, 05.05 | the way of trust

Abram is a great hero of the Bible for many reasons, and it all started with his decision to pursue God's call on his life. He, in faith, trusted God and changed the destiny of every generation to follow him. Tonight, we talk about this kind of trust in our own contexts and ask what it might look like to be willing to do literally anything to follow the call that God places on our own lives.

season 01, 05.04 | the way up is down

The tower of Babel is an epic tale of rebellion, pride, and fame. Our desire for recognition and significance apart from God is dangerous and it will lead to our demise every single time. Tonight, we explore this main idea: the way up is down and out.

season 01, 05.03 | making waves

Following the choice Adam and Eve made, the fall of human beings from God’s grace, the world just keeps getting crazier. Fast forward about 1,600 years and God has decided that the wages of sin truly are death. He identifies a man, Noah, as his last hope for the human race and floods the world to wipe out life. What can we take from this thousands of years later living in the world that God created for humans to enjoy and partner with him in, but needed one last dramatic intervention to truly save?

season 01, 05.02 | east of eden

Adam and Eve are in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place where they are in constant contact with God and flourishing. Tonight we look at what happens when human nature and sin enter the picture of God’s creation and what it means for the entire Biblical story that leads to Jesus and his work on our behalf.

season 01, 05.01 | we are no accident

We kick off a new study beginning in the book of Genesis tonight! The creation story captured in Genesis 1 & 2 is rich with meaning and has much to say about the kind of God we have and his dream for the world. The God of the Bible is involved in his creation and involves us in his plans to move the creation project forward.
